What I check before joining a senior engineering engagement

The first conversation tells me a lot.

I want to understand what is actually blocked, who feels the pain, and whether the team needs hands-on delivery, technical direction, or a steadier way to make decisions.

I usually start with four questions:

  1. What must be shipped in the next few weeks?
  2. Which part of the system is hardest to change?
  3. Where does product judgment currently get lost between people?
  4. What would make the engagement obviously useful after the first month?

That keeps the work honest. A senior engineer should reduce uncertainty, not add process for its own sake.
